Cindy Blake, Mentor, Inspired By Mentees’ Energy
More than 150 women attended the Mentoring Monday event at Union Station on February 25, 2019.
Mentoring Monday is a nationwide event hosted by the St. Louis Business Journal and its sister publications. The event aims to encourage women in business by featuring speed mentoring – yes, like speed dating! The mentors – local experts in a wide range of industries – have quick coaching sessions with a series of mentees. The mentees also included a wide variety of participants, from women with long-established careers to a number of Girl Scouts.
Our own Cindy Blake, chosen as a mentor, felt inspired by the energy of “all the amazing women” at the event, but especially by the mentees. “They were looking for different kinds of advice, but all were there to learn and better themselves,” Cindy reports. “I always strive to be one step ahead of those that are one step ahead. The women I met on Monday were doing just that. They wanted the knowledge to better themselves and it showed by their energy and the questions they asked.”
Cindy’s most memorable mentee already had plenty of corporate experience and a high-paying job, but she wanted to be passionate about her work. “Many people asked about careers in the non-profit area. My advice? Figure out what you are passionate about, volunteer for causes you love and take additional classes to learn about the non-profit world. Most important – remember that your ‘soft skills’ will take you very far!”
Cindy enjoyed this opportunity to help others because it feels good to do good! #SeeTheGood
